Soap making was recorded in the Bible:
Jeremiah 2:22 “Although you wash with soap and use an abundance of cleansing powder…”
Malachi 3:2 “… For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.”
The large-scale production of soap started in 1791 using goat fat and beechwood ash. Our ancestors used plants with medicinal value as lye, such as the sour fig, lye-bush, ash bush, and elephant tree. Our grandmother used the ash bush that occurs in the Middelpos district. The soap pot and wooden spatula and white linen became a South African tradition during the Voortrekker period. Our mother, Johanna Louw learned the cold-water method from an old neighbour in the district. Ou Handel’s Boerseep is made with natural ingredients, with no additives.
